The Power of Resilience, Transforming Workplace Stress and Anxiety...

The modern workplace can be a breeding ground for stress and anxiety.
With constant pressure to meet deadlines, manage workload, and navigate complex relationships, it's no wonder that many employees are struggling to cope.
The statistics are staggering:

* 612,000 workers in the UK suffered from work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2020/21 (HSE, 2021)
* 45% of employees reported feeling stressed at work, with 16% experiencing anxiety and 12% experiencing depression (CIPD, 2020)
* Stress and anxiety cost UK businesses an estimated £1.3 billion in lost productivity and absenteeism (Mental Health Foundation, 2019)

A survey by Southern Cross Health Insurance and Business New Zealand found that in 2020:

New Zealand lost 7.3 million working days due to work absence. This is down 7.4 million working days in 2018.
The cost of absence to the economy was $1.85 billion, up from $1.79 billion in 2018.
22% of workers still go to work sick, down from 35% in 2018.
64% of organisations report stress is increasing, with Covid-19 as a significant contributor.

Worldwide, 44% of employees said they experienced a lot of stress the previous day.
This is the second year in a row worker stress reached record levels.

WHAT IS STRESS & ANXIETY

Imagine your brain as a bustling metropolis, with neurons firing, chemicals exchanging messages, and various departments working together to ensure your survival.
When stress and anxiety enter the scene, they can send your brain into a frenzy and disrupt the harmonious balance of your inner landscape. Stress and anxiety are also important messengers letting us know that there is something for us to learn, pay attention to, or change in our lives.
What happens in the brain when we are stressed, or more accurately, when we personally perceive an external or internal stimulus to be a stressor?
Let's dive into the neurochemical world to understand the effects of stress on our brains.
When faced with a perceived stressful stimulus, your amygdala - the brain's alarm system - sends a distress signal to the hypothalamus.
In response, the hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system, triggering the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and overall alertness, preparing your body for a 'fight or flight' response. While this response is essential for survival, chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system can lead to a host of health issues, including anxiety, depression, and even heart disease.

Speaking of anxiety, what's going on in the brain when we experience anxiety?
Anxiety can be thought of as an overactive alarm system.
Your brain's fear center, the amygdala, becomes overly sensitive to potential threats, constantly scanning the environment and creating and inner dialogue of ‘worst case scenarios’, sending exaggerated responses to the hypothalamus. The result is an overabundance of stress hormones and a heightened state of fear, worry, and apprehension.

Anxious thoughts, create anxious emotional states, a tense body, sleepless nights, mental fog, poor decision-making abilities, and many other symptoms - and the loop continues, until we realize we can press pause and choose a new thought, we can use self-directed neuroplasticity tools and jump off the wheel. More often than not (if we stop and pay attention) we may discover that a body sensation, like a churning or constriction will be present with anxiety. By doing something simple like asking ourselves, ‘what posture is the opposite to fear?” and intentionally standing or sitting with the new posture for 60 seconds, we can discover ‘fear is normally only an inch thick’ when we actually feel it fully, then change our physiology - the mind follows.
We are going to explore a number of well researched self-directed neuro-plasticity tools, a little further into the course!

Suffering is an unquestioned mind, left to run wild in the savanna of habitual thinking.
